Owners of buildings equipped with a fire alarm system, and that contain Group A-1, A-2, A-3, Group B or Group M occupancies, now have an extra 6 months to install carbon monoxide detectors as required by Local Law 191.. Here's what you need to know.

Local Law 191

By January 1st, 2021 existing buildings that are equipped with a fire alarm system and contain assembly (A), business (B), and mercantile (M) occupancies were required to install carbon monoxide detectors if they were not already present in the building. Such carbon monoxide detectors installed pursuant to this Local Law should have built-in sounder bases, transmit a signal to a central supervising station, and be permitted to initiate an audible and visual supervisory alarm at a constantly attended location. Kitchens are exempt from this requirement.

This deadline has been pushed to July 1st, 2021.

This new date replaces the prior January 1, 2021 deadline. A new bill approved by the City Council on December 17, 2020, and expected to become law on January 18, 2021, extends the deadline for compliance to July 1, 2021. To determine your building's occupancy group, please refer to your building's certificate of occupancy or to Chapter 3 of the New York City Building Code.
