New signage requirements in NYC
In an attempt to standardize the appearance of temporary protective structures and provide easily accessible information to the public about ongoing projects, the Department of Buildings (DOB) has updated its signage requirements for construction site fences and sidewalk fences. 1-, 2- and 3-family homes are exempt from these rules.
Content
A rendering or zoning diagram of the building exterior free of logos or commercial symbols (i.e., the McDonald’s arch)
This requirement does not apply to demolition projects
Title stating “Work in Progress” and specifying occupancy type (e.g. residential, commercial)
Corporate name, address, and phone number of the property’s owner
Corporate name and phone number of general contractor (or demolition contractor)
The statement “TO ANONYMOUSLY REPORT UNSAFE CONDITIONS AT THIS WORK SITE, CALL 311” and “PARA REPORTAR CONDICIONES PELIGROSAS EN UN SITIO DE TRABAJO, LLAME AL 311. NO TIENE QUE DAR SU NOMBRE.”
Appearance Requirements

Font must be Calibri or similar to it, with upper case letters at least 1 inch high
Size Requirements
Construction Sites
For street frontage greater than 60 feet, panels must be 6 feet wide by 4 feet high
For street frontage of less than 60 feet, panels must be 55 inches wide by 36.5 inches high
Demolition Sites
Dimensions of panel must be 2’4’’ wide and 4’’ high, regardless of street frontage
Material Requirements
Project information panels’ construction materials must be:
Durable and weatherproof, like vinyl, plastic or aluminum
Flame retardant
Permit information must be
Laminated or encased in a plastic covering for protection from weather, OR
Printed directed on the project information panel itself.
Other types of required signs must be posted at the job site, but they should be readily visible to workers, not the public. DOT permits and OSHA signs may be inside site; FDNY standpipe signs go outside.
