2022 NYC Construction Code: What’s Changed? Part 3: Mechanical
The 2022 NYC Mechanical Code: Major Changes
With the 2022 NYC Building Code now fully enacted, there are several changes provisions that contractors and building owners should be aware of. Whether it’s your first time or you’re a veteran who’s been dealing with the Department of Buildings for years, knowing the code requirements is the first step towards keeping your project on time and budget, and avoiding costly red-tape delays.
Here are a few of the more significant changes. Note that we have reduced and/or simplified some of the copy for the sake of clarity and/or brevity. For the full text and requirements of the code, click the link to visit the relevant section.
Changes in Energy Efficiency Standards
One of the most critical updates in the 2022 NYC Mechanical Code is the adoption of more stringent energy efficiency standards. These new standards align with the city's ambitious climate goals, which aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050. The updated code now includes:
Enhanced insulation requirements (Section MC 604): The new code mandates higher R-values for insulation materials in both residential and commercial buildings, effectively increasing their energy efficiency.
Updated standards for HVAC equipment (Section MC 701.2): The 2022 code specifies higher efficiency standards for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, in line with the latest advancements in technology. These specifications–fully listed in the New York City Energy Conservation Code–are entirely new since the previous, 2008 version of the code.
Strengthening Fire Safety Measures
In the 2022 NYC Mechanical Code, various fire safety measures have been reinforced to better protect occupants and property. Notable updates include:
Improved fire and smoke dampers (Section MC 607): The new code requires more robust fire and smoke dampers, ensuring that these devices effectively prevent the spread of fire and smoke within a building.
Additional compliance requirements for duct smoke detectors (Section MC 606.1): The updated code mandates that duct smoke detectors must comply with UL268A, while other smoke detectors must comply with UL 268–specific requirements that were not listed in the previous version of the code.
Enhanced fire-resistant construction requirements (Section BC 703): The 2022 code establishes stricter fire-resistant construction criteria, which provide better protection for mechanical systems and reduce the risk of fire spreading between building spaces.
Updates to Ventilation Requirements
The 2022 NYC Mechanical Code also features significant changes to ventilation requirements, aiming to improve indoor air quality and promote healthier living environments. Key updates include:
New outdoor air requirements (Section MC 403.2): The updated code introduces more stringent outdoor air requirements, ensuring that sufficient fresh air is supplied to occupied spaces.
Enhanced exhaust system standards (Section MC 501): The new code establishes stricter guidelines for exhaust systems, including those for kitchens, laboratories, and toilet rooms, to remove contaminants more effectively.
Updated air balancing provisions (Section 601): The 2022 code includes revised air balancing provisions to ensure proper air distribution and maintain optimal indoor air quality.
These are just a selection of the many changes to the Mechanical Code, as well as the larger NYC Building Code. To ensure that your project stays on schedule by meeting all necessary codes and permitting requirements, talk to an expert at Green Light Expediting today!
